Centre for Civil Society Strengthening (CCSS), a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), has been nominated to join an international body Civil Society Working Group on Women, Peace and Security.

A letter from Gender, Peace and Security Programme to CCSS executive director Viwemi Chavula says the organisation was appointed after a review last month.

Reads the letter in part: “We are pleased to inform you that the African Union Interdepartmental Evaluation Committee met on October 11-12 2022 to review and to select 15 civil society organisations to be part of [working group].

“In this regard, we are happy to inform you that your organisation has been selected to serve as a member of the [group].”

In an interview yesterday, Chavula said it was an honour for his organisation to serve in such a high profile group.

“We are a member of the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Technical Working Committee and we will be able to share and plough back what is coming from regional and African stages on issues about women, peace and security. It will also give the country’s visibility,” he said.

The organisation is working to ensure that there is more women representation in Parliament and leadership positions.
